ESSAY CONTEST OVERVIEW

Hyattsville, Maryland – Celebrating 45 Years of serving Prince George’s County, MD as the “Anchor of the East”, The Hyattsville/Landover Alumni Chapter proudly presents our 37th Annual Essay Writing Contest. The purpose of the contest is to provide the high school students of Prince George’s County an opportunity, outside of their normal school curriculum, to strengthen and enhance their literary skills as well as increase their knowledge of local and national issues. This will be accomplished through a written expression of their opinions in the form of an essay.

The contest is scheduled to run from February 15th – March 29th, 2024.

A panel of independent judges, who are well-respected and vital members of our community, will select the top finalists. The finalists will be notified in April and will receive one of the prizes for being a finalist during our Student Achievement Ceremony in May 2024.

ESSAY CONTEST PRIZES

Prizes for this year’s contest include:

·         1st Place – $500

·         2nd Place – HP Laptop

·         3rd Place – Apple Watch

ESSAY CONTEST QUESTIONS

This year’s topic questions are:

1.        Is Artificial Intelligence (AI) one of the biggest threats humanity has ever faced, or are the fears about AI overblown? Explain the rationale for your conclusions.

2.       Should it be up to the Federal government or the States to control immigration at the border? Explain.

3.       An alarming number of young people are being arrested in Prince George’s County for carjacking and auto theft cases. What should the County do to deter youth from committing these types of crimes?

4.       Should a person being accused of leading an insurrection be prevented from running for President of the United States? Why or why not?

5.       You’re given the task of creating a cover of a magazine that highlights famous African Americans. Describe your cover including why you selected these individuals.

A panel of independent judges, who are well-respected and vital members of our community, will select the top finalists. The finalists will be invited to our Student Achievement Ceremony in May and will receive one of the prizes for being a finalist.

ESSAY CONTEST REQUIREMENTS:

Eligibility Requirements:

1.       Participants must be a high school student and resident of Prince George’s County, Maryland

2.       Only ONE entry per participant

Essay Requirements:

1.       Essays must be 1000 words or less, double-spaced, and use 12-point Times Roman font

2.       Must be saved as a MS Word Document or Adobe PDF file format

3.       Cover page must include Title of the Essay, Essay Topic Number, Name, Address, Phone#, Email Address, School, Grade, and Age

By entering the contest, entrants grant permission for sponsors to publish all or part of their submitted essay and to use the entrant’s name and photograph to publicize the successful entries – all without royalty or other consideration.

Essays must be received by 11:59 p.m. on March 29th, 2024, and adhere to the contest format. CONTEST FINALISTS WILL BE NOTIFIED IN APRIL 2024 AND MUST BE PRESENT AT THE CHAPTER’S STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT CEREMONY IN MAY 2024, TO CLAIM THEIR PRIZE.
