Brief History of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity

KAPPA ALPHA PSI, a college Fraternity, now comprised of functioning Undergraduate and Alumni Chapters on major campuses and in cities throughout the country, is the crystallization of a dream. It is the beautiful realization of a vision shared commonly by the late Revered Founders:

Elder Watson Diggs, Byron Kenneth Armstong, Ezra dee alexander, Henry Tourner Asher, Marcus peter blakemore, paul wamond cain, george wesley edmond, guy levis grant, edward giles irvin, john miltion lee

It was the vision of these astute men that enabled them in the school year 1910 – 11, more specifically the night of January 5, 1911, on the campus of Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, to sow the seed of a fraternal tree whose fruit is available to, and now enjoyed by, college men everywhere, regardless of their color, religion or national origin. It is a fact of which KAPPA ALPHA PSI is justly proud that the Constitution has never contained any clause which either excluded or suggested the exclusion of a man from membership merely because of his color, creed, or national origin. The Constitution of KAPPA ALPHA PSI is predicated upon, and dedicated to, the principles of achievement through a truly democratic Fraternity. Early History of the
Hyattsville / Landover (MD) Alumni Chapter

In early October, 1978, a group of twelve (12) KAPPAS expressed an interest in establishing an Alumni Chapter in the Prince George’s County, Maryland. The Provincial Polemarch was contacted and granted authorization to undertake preliminary steps to establish a chapter. As an initial requirement, the Grand Chapter mandated that the names of five (5) Brothers in good standing be submitted to Philadelphia. This was necessary for the Grand Chapter to conduct its investigation of this request. In the interest of expediting chapter formation, the group of twelve (12) Brothers decided to submit the names of the following Brothers who are life members:

James Childs, Larry Jenkins, McKinley Hayes, Marty Miller, George Yates

On October 12, 1978, the Largo-Landover Alumni Association was established. Efforts were then concentrated on pursuing a Charter. After the completion of a favorable investigation by the Grand Chapter, the names of ten (10) Brothers in good financial standing were submitted as required. Those Brothers included:

Roland Dotson, Leon Johnson, Joseph Pasteur, Delray Gooch, Tyrone Medley, Charles Richardson, Roland Moore, Albert Squire, Nathaniel Hopkins, Elmore Wright

Receipt of this list was acknowledged by the Grand Chapter on January 4, 1979.

While the procedural requirements were being met, a nucleus of twenty-two (22) Brothers, renewed their bonds and diligently worked to procure the Charter. In addition to the previously mentioned Brothers, the names of the following seven (7) KAPPAS were also submitted as petitioners for our Charter:

Thomas Johnson, Lionel Acosta, Herman Roebuck, David Winfield, Lynn Edwards, K. Bernard Chase,  Andre Robinson

This group of twenty-two (22) has become to be known as the Charterers of the Hyattsville-Landover (Maryland) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

On February 4, 1979, the Grand Board of Directors officially approved our Chapter. The formal Chartering Ceremony took place on the eighteenth day of March, in the year of our Lord One-thousand nine hundred seventy nine. We were honored to have the ritual conducted by Dr. James Abrams, the Eastern Province Polemarch with assistance from Past Grand Polemarchs Greene and and Laurel Wreath holder Massie.
